KB was proud to host their first sanctioned bicycling event on Nov. 14th during their annual ski swap and open house. Bicycling in November?  That’s correct, and beyond that the competitors will be wishing for rain, snow, mud and all sorts of nasty conditions that would drive most cyclist to the couch dreaming of dry summer roads or trails and the sweet arcs of winter looming on the horizon. What we have here folks is a CYCLOCROSS RACE.

5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk
Saturday, November 7th, 2009
1:00 p.m. start, Lackawanna, NY
• Finish line: WNY Finish Line Services
• USATF certified Course (Cert. No. NY07024JG)
• Entire race within the confines of Holy Cross Cemetery, 2900 South Park Avenue, Lackawanna.

Last year this was, believe it or not, the fun event of 2008. It is a competition put on by a couple of local Tonawanda friends, Matt & Shannnon Coleman and Blake Ellman.

Now I don’t know what on earth would tempt people to want to get together to see who can eat the most meat in a set time frame, but this event is just that. This year is the 4th Annual Meat Destroyer for them and they promise it will be bigger and better than ever. Well for starters, the group will continue to supply all the meat for this competition. They’re also adding complimentary beers this year and to top that, the winner will not only walk away with a full belly but also a custom made hand blown glass trophy.

The event is scheduled for June 6th just in time to start the Western NY grilling season. Being an official Kansas City BBQ judge, I will say that they made some of the best grilled food that I had tasted throughout the 2008 season.

Their tag line for this event says it all, “The competitive eating is optional, but the fun is not.”

Now here’s the catch!  This is an invite only competition. So I’ll be checking my mailbox daily.

Remember, you gotta have more nerves than a toothache to enter this competition.
