It was just a few years ago that Ryan showed up at one of the last races of the season held on the Tonawanda Creek/Firehall course. We were waiting for the "B" race to start and he pulled up on a new bike with cycling shorts and a jersey.. and tennis sneakers. It was hard to take him seriously at first; he had never raced bikes, but he talked about motorcycle racing like a retired veteran.

He was nervous and anxious, so we recommended he just try to hang on in the back and stay out of trouble. At the end of the race when the wind-up to the sprint started, we realized he was still with the pack and hadn't been dropped. That's when we realized this kid was special; its very rare for a complete novice and a junior to be so fit and race ready with zero experience. It wasn't long before he was consistently winning and advancing, and there doesn't seem to be any limit to how far he can go. Keep winning, Ryan!

Ryan reminds me of back in the day when a few other youngster by the names of Garlapow (x2), Humbert (x2), Baker, Donofrio and DeChau reined the cycling community. Ryan has those skills and the friendly personality of all those mentioned.

Nice article, Terry! It looks like the sport has really grown in popularity since I left WNY a dozen years ago.
