For too long the 850 children at Gateway Longview have been silent because for children without families, or children who have suffered abuse do not have a voice. But, on January 9, 2010 at 7 p.m., these children will be heard loud and clear through the fundraising efforts of 51 prominent local and emerging artists to “Break the Silence”.Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, Buffalo, NY will be the site of this most auspicious occasion. After suffering the emotional loss of losing a child, local photographer, Cheryl Gorski volunteered to take some pictures of the kids for their adoption campaign, at which time she was struck with the stark reality of these children’s lives. “We must let these children be heard and Break the Silence. They need us. You don’t need to go to a foreign country to adopt a child. We have children in need right here in Western New York”, said Gorski.
The evening will feature music and entertainment by Joseph Michael Mahfoud, Emile Latimer, Sabu Adeyola, Sechaba Molefe, Leah Russo, Geno Mc Manus, Dr. B. Andrew Lane & The Destiny Covenant Christian Center Worship Team, Roszella Davis, The Clark Academy Dancers, Jimmy Bigrook Hawkins and O’Connell And Company

Food will be provided by the Lafayette Tap Room, Gormet Sorbet, and a cash bar by the Shea’s Buffalo Performing Arts Center.

At 9pm the live auction will begin, with auctioneer Steve Phillips of The Lodge Auction House calling for bids on the art. $15.00 admission 7 PM – 11 P. Sponsorships are available. The premier event of New York Road Runners, the ING New York City Marathon is one of the world’s great road races, drawing more than 100,000 applicants annually.

The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the more than $600,000 in prize money, but also for the chance to excel in the media capital of the world before two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. Originally this race had planned to bring you our traditional 2 day, 3 stage race. Unfortunately, it recently became apparent that there was heavy opposition from local government to conduct the stage two criterium (and for that matter- the stage one time trial). With a sluggish pre-registration, the race committee did not think it was worth the fight to go to the matte for a full blown stage race. As a result, the Owasco Stage Race has been reduced to the Owasco Road Race. We think our road courses based on your selected class are worthy of your attendance.

If the early stages of Ryan Nye’s racing career are any indication, then the road before him certainly looks promising.

Though the 20-year-old native of Lockport, New York, has only been cycling for few years, he has in that short span gained a wealth of experience which helped propel him through the professional ranks.

This past winter and spring were spent training and competing in the Southwestern US, where Nye reigned as the number-one ranked Category 2 rider for a period of time. Notable performances included a 2nd-place finish at California’s San Dimas stage race, and a victory at the Tucson Bicycle Classic in Arizona.

“I was in Tucson all winter and it made me a lot stronger training in the warmth,” Nye recalls. “In peak season you train 20 hours a week … you train more in the spring and winter ‘cause you’re racing more in the summer.”

The recent season’s success saw Nye promoted to the Category 1 level, where the elite competition has taken some getting used to.

“When you’re a 2 you race a lot with the pros, but can still do 2-only races which are a little bit easier,” he explains.

“But when you’re Category 1, there is no hiding. You’re doing pro races no matter what.”

Yet like any great athlete, Nye will undoubtedly rise to the challenge and continue to hone his racing skills at the highest competitive level.

A former professional motocross racer, Nye took to cycling at age 16 and has yet to look back. He’s currently a member of the MVP Health Care cycling team where he specializes in road racing and criteriums, and credits the team experience for providing him with an extra source of motivation from his fellow riders.

“It’s kind of nice to have strong teammates to help you through races,” says Nye. “That’s the best part of it.”

Nye is able to keep up the camaraderie via the Internet, where social networking sites allow him to keep in touch both with old friends back home, as well as new industry contacts made on the road.

“A lot of the pro teams are following me on Twitter which is cool to see … you get a result and all of a sudden another team’s following you,” he says. “And on Facebook, you keep up with old friends and also stay in touch with people you meet at races.”

And there are sure to be many new acquaintances made in the busy season that lies ahead.

Born as Lance Edward Gunderson on September 18th of 1971 in Plano Texas, Lance got the name Armstrong from his stepfather who adopted him in 1974. Of course Lance became famous as a professional road racing cyclist starting his racing career at the age of 12 when he won his first adult competition. In his early years Armstrong was actually a tri-athlete ranked number one in the 87-88 season as a teenager. He then became a pro tri-athlete and from 89-90 was a champion in the triathlon type known as “sprint course”. Lance Armstrong is perhaps most popular for his races in the Tour de France which he won seven times in a row from 99-2005 breaking the record previously held by Miguel Indurian who had won 5 times in a row. In 1999 Armstrong was recognized by ABC as the Sports Athlete Of The Year. Three years later he was named sportsman of the year in 2002 by Sports Illustrated magazine. He was also named the Male Athlete Of The Year by AP from 2002-2005.

After the testicular cancer he developed spread to his brain, abdomen, and lungs in 1996, Armstrong underwent testicular surgery as well as brain surgery due to the cancer being diagnosed as third stage. He was only given a three percent chance to live and decided to go with chemotherapy which he underwent while continuing to train for cycling. After his remarkable recovery Lance started the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997 followed by the well known “Live Strong” yellow rubber bracelets in 2004.

After three years out of the cycling world he returned to win the Tour de France beating Alex Zulle by 7 minutes and 37 seconds. In the year 2000 Armstrong faced Marco Pantani and Jan Ullrich, two well known competitors he had longed to race with and he defeated them by a little more than 6 minutes. After his years of consecutive wins many accused him of taking performance enhancing drugs but the fact of the matter is that it was his body’s natural response to fighting off the cancer he had that changed the physiology of his body.

The fact of the matter is that he specifically trained for the Tour de France and did not compete in other races, this allowed him to train for six months at a time trained by Chris Carmichael, a former cyclist, for each Tour de France, a luxury that his competitors did not have.

Armstrong’s high tolerance to lactic acid buildup which allowed him a higher cadence in lower gears and his higher than average aerobic threshold are also factors that contributed to his unprecedented success. Of significance is the low lactate levels in his body which is a very unusual physical trait and one that has helped him to remain at the top of his sport.

Last year this was, believe it or not, the fun event of 2008. It is a competition put on by a couple of local Tonawanda friends, Matt & Shannnon Coleman and Blake Ellman.

Now I don’t know what on earth would tempt people to want to get together to see who can eat the most meat in a set time frame, but this event is just that. This year is the 4th Annual Meat Destroyer for them and they promise it will be bigger and better than ever. Well for starters, the group will continue to supply all the meat for this competition. They’re also adding complimentary beers this year and to top that, the winner will not only walk away with a full belly but also a custom made hand blown glass trophy.

The event is scheduled for June 6th just in time to start the Western NY grilling season. Being an official Kansas City BBQ judge, I will say that they made some of the best grilled food that I had tasted throughout the 2008 season.

Their tag line for this event says it all, “The competitive eating is optional, but the fun is not.”

Now here’s the catch!  This is an invite only competition. So I’ll be checking my mailbox daily.

Remember, you gotta have more nerves than a toothache to enter this competition.

It has been a few years now that a new web site has been floating around in my head. I just could not to find the time to get it all together. One year I had the layout done, constructing it with Dream-weaver and Flash, but never could really follow through. There always seemed to be something that was missing.  The problem has always been that after spending so much time on a design and layout that you grow tired of  it and then in the end, want to change it yet again.

This year I said is the year to finish it. But of course after about 5 more changes and then a total start over.  The site reflected is the result of the total start over. While not finished, I think I have it to a point that I can post it. I think by doing this, I can’t do another total revamp.  Well, let’s see if that will be fact. Although; I have many more changes and add on to perform, this is it for now.

Don’t worry, I’ll keep the old site up somewhere. At least until I finish transferring all the links and some of the older events.
