"Shuffle Off To Buffalo"

For too long the 850 children at Gateway Longview have been silent because for children without families, or children who have suffered abuse do not have a voice. But, on January 9, 2010 at 7 p.m., these children will be heard loud and clear through the fundraising efforts of 51 prominent local and emerging artists to “Break the Silence”.Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, Buffalo, NY will be the site of this most auspicious occasion. After suffering the emotional loss of losing a child, local photographer, Cheryl Gorski volunteered to take some pictures of the kids for their adoption campaign, at which time she was struck with the stark reality of these children’s lives. “We must let these children be heard and Break the Silence. They need us. You don’t need to go to a foreign country to adopt a child. We have children in need right here in Western New York”, said Gorski.
The evening will feature music and entertainment by Joseph Michael Mahfoud, Emile Latimer, Sabu Adeyola, Sechaba Molefe, Leah Russo, Geno Mc Manus, Dr. B. Andrew Lane & The Destiny Covenant Christian Center Worship Team, Roszella Davis, The Clark Academy Dancers, Jimmy Bigrook Hawkins and O’Connell And Company

Food will be provided by the Lafayette Tap Room, Gormet Sorbet, and a cash bar by the Shea’s Buffalo Performing Arts Center.

At 9pm the live auction will begin, with auctioneer Steve Phillips of The Lodge Auction House calling for bids on the art. $15.00 admission 7 PM – 11 P. Sponsorships are available. Sponsors can call: 716 903 0600 and ask for Cheryl. All auction proceeds to benefit the children of Gateway Longview, a child and family service organization.

The premier event of New York Road Runners, the ING New York City Marathon is one of the world’s great road races, drawing more than 100,000 applicants annually.

The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the more than $600,000 in prize money, but also for the chance to excel in the media capital of the world before two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. As any one of the more than 700,000 past participants will attest, crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the great thrills of a lifetime.
“But when you’re Category 1, there is no hiding. You’re doing pro races no matter what.”

If the early stages of Ryan Nye’s racing career are any indication, then the road before him certainly looks promising.

Though the 20-year-old native of Lockport, New York, has only been cycling for few years, he has in that short span gained a wealth of experience which helped propel him through the professional ranks.

This past winter and spring were spent training and competing in the Southwestern US, where Nye reigned as the number-one ranked Category 2 rider for a period of time. Notable performances included a 2nd-place finish at California’s San Dimas stage race, and a victory at the Tucson Bicycle Classic in Arizona.

“I was in Tucson all winter and it made me a lot stronger training in the warmth,” Nye recalls. “In peak season you train 20 hours a week … you train more in the spring and winter ‘cause you’re racing more in the summer.”

The recent season’s success saw Nye promoted to the Category 1 level, where the elite competition has taken some getting used to.

“When you’re a 2 you race a lot with the pros, but can still do 2-only races which are a little bit easier,” he explains.

“But when you’re Category 1, there is no hiding. You’re doing pro races no matter what.”

Yet like any great athlete, Nye will undoubtedly rise to the challenge and continue to hone his racing skills at the highest competitive level.

A former professional motocross racer, Nye took to cycling at age 16 and has yet to look back. He’s currently a member of the MVP Health Care cycling team where he specializes in road racing and criteriums, and credits the team experience for providing him with an extra source of motivation from his fellow riders.

“It’s kind of nice to have strong teammates to help you through races,” says Nye. “That’s the best part of it.”

Nye is able to keep up the camaraderie via the Internet, where social networking sites allow him to keep in touch both with old friends back home, as well as new industry contacts made on the road.

“A lot of the pro teams are following me on Twitter which is cool to see … you get a result and all of a sudden another team’s following you,” he says. “And on Facebook, you keep up with old friends and also stay in touch with people you meet at races.”

And there are sure to be many new acquaintances made in the busy season that lies ahead.

Last year this was, believe it or not, the fun event of 2008. It is a competition put on by a couple of local Tonawanda friends, Matt & Shannnon Coleman and Blake Ellman.

Now I don’t know what on earth would tempt people to want to get together to see who can eat the most meat in a set time frame, but this event is just that. This year is the 4th Annual Meat Destroyer for them and they promise it will be bigger and better than ever. Well for starters, the group will continue to supply all the meat for this competition. They’re also adding complimentary beers this year and to top that, the winner will not only walk away with a full belly but also a custom made hand blown glass trophy.

The event is scheduled for June 6th just in time to start the Western NY grilling season. Being an official Kansas City BBQ judge, I will say that they made some of the best grilled food that I had tasted throughout the 2008 season.

Their tag line for this event says it all, “The competitive eating is optional, but the fun is not.”

Now here’s the catch! This is an invite only competition. So I’ll be checking my mailbox daily.

Remember, you gotta have more nerves than a toothache to enter this competition.

Did Anyone See Where My Youth Went?

by kphirst

How do you recapture youth? People over forty want to know.

If you see a man over forty wearing an ace bandage, a brace or a cast on any part of his body, you see a man who’s been injured in the battle against getting old. Whether his battlefield was a basketball court, a football field or a ski slope, the bad guys were younger. As this wounded warrior “becomes less young”, there will be more and more guys to battle; and they’ll hurt his ego more than his body. Eventually, one of those young guys will propose to his daughter. Then the warrior will know real pain.

In spite of pain, however, we over-forties continue to jog. We continue to swing racquets and clubs. We think we can postpone aging by not letting go of youth.

Supposedly, we don’t have to let go of bicycles because we never forget how to ride them. We may wobble until we get our balance, we may overcompensate for turning one way by turning too sharply the other way, but we never forget how to ride. We just forget how hard the bicycle seat is and how sore our legs will get.

In an attempt to temporarily forget our age, John and I went to a dance club. The bartender was polishing glasses while the DJ set up his equipment. No one else was there; and according to the bartender, no one would be there until at least eleven. John and I smiled, finished our drinks and went home. I don’t know how people can stay up that late and be productive the next day – but that night I realized I was too old to lose sleep worrying about it.

Beauty product manufacturers, cosmetic dentists and plastic surgeons profit from our trying to recapture our youth. I accept that, but wouldn’t it be nice if that trying qualified as exercise?

Wouldn’t it be nice if plastic surgery was like ironing clothes – something we did just to make ourselves look better – not younger? Of course, lots of clothes don’t need ironing. Maybe it would be better to put rayon in our body creams.

What would be best would be learning to age well. A man in his late eighties told me there were only two problems with getting old – incontinence and impotence – and then he laughed. His laugh was ageless.

Sports Massage – An Athletes Tale

by Galway

I consider myself a competitive athlete and runner. Okay, I may not be World or Olympic class and I probably won’t go breaking any records but I train on a regular basis in view of competing with other athletes to win an event. For years I followed a basic regime and set out my own training schedule to target a particular run, however it wasn’t until I started using sports massage that I realised I’d been missing an important element in my training that soon raised my standard quite considerably.

Sports massage uses a number of specialised techniques and has helped my performance and hopefully prevented a lot of injuries. It also helped me overcome a particularly painful calf muscle injury I suffered a few years ago. Having had the injury before, I knew I would be out of action for at least two months but I found the sports massage reduced that by a number of weeks.

Before a marathon event I probably train for up to ten hours a week and often find my muscles becoming sore and tense as the week progresses. This affects my training as I can’t push myself any further. As soon as I started seeing a sports massage therapist, my muscles felt far more relaxed and the extra activity I was subjecting my body to was no longer an issue.

My sports massage therapist (and all of the others for that matter) uses a deep tissue technique called ‘frictions’. This gets down into the muscle fibres and scar tissue and helps to break down lesions. It can be pretty painful but I’ve learned to try and relax when it’s happening; tensing up only makes it worse! The brief pain, which at times can be pleasurable, is worth it as I notice the results within a day or two and beyond that I find the problem has all but gone.

It’s important to find a therapist who is trained and experienced in this field and also try and build a good relationship with them. I was lucky to find one who was also a runner and he understood exactly what I needed from the treatment and the cause of any problems I was having. That said, any decent sports massage therapist will be trained to identify your needs but make sure you can work with them otherwise you won’t get the most out of your therapy. You’ll also find they will give you tips on stretches and exercises you can do at home. I soon learned that some of the warm-up routines I was doing before a run weren’t being done properly and as soon as I followed his advice I found my running performance improved.

Some injuries do need specialist treatment from a doctor or physiotherapist and a good sports massage therapist will advise you of this, but for day-to-day niggles, aches and pains sports massage is definitely the way to go. Also, as I’m not a professional athlete and can’t afford (and probably don’t need) a coach or full-time physio, I find sports massage to be a cost I can bear and a therapy that I can benefit from.

Definitely make sports massage part of your training as much as fitness or diet. You’ll find that even after a few sessions your body will start to react differently and all of those muscle injuries that mount up over a season start to reduce. Give it a go!
